10th Grade

Religion:

Language Arts:
Tenth grade English is devoted to Theatre survey in the Fall semester and speech in the Spring semester. In the spring, students will shift to working on their oral communication skills. Students will study great speeches in history. They will study the components of the traditional speech, study what makes a successful speech, and deliver multiple speeches in front of the class.

History:
World History is taught in 10th grade. The course is taught in the context of world geography. The course covers key developments in civilizations around the world during the last 2,000 years, with emphasis on the last 500 years. In addition to studying significant conflicts between countries, the course also covers key inventions, social movements and economic developments.

Science:
Students study Biology in 10th grade at Unity High School. Among the topics studied are:
cell structure and function, cell division, genetics, human body systems, ecosystems, plant forms and animal biology, including an opportunity for dissection.

Math:
Each student will continue with his or her individual lesson plan in math, based on their performance from the year prior.

Foreign Language:
All students will further their studies in the language they selected the year prior. Students will be expected to master concepts sufficiently to demonstrate a remedial ability to read, write, speak and understand simple conversations. At the conclusion of the academic year, as part of the process of demonstrating mastery of the subject, students will perform a skit in Spanish.

Service:

Service plays a crucial role in the eduction of the student at Unity High School and thus one day out of the week will be devoted to non-core courses, focusing on leadership, life-skills and service. As UHS will seek to cultivate an environment where leaders are born, students will be asked to step outside of themselves and outside of the classroom to serve those in need. Be it interacting with residents at a nursing home or helping a farmer with his crops, students will learn how to effectively communicate with those they are serving and how to work together with one another towards a common goal.

Character:
Merriam-Webster defines character as "moral excellence and firmness." How can one teach another to have character and thus to have moral excellence and firmness? What does that look like? Not necessarily something that can just talked about in order to learn or obtain, character is such that it needs to be observed, chosen and reaffirmed by the individual. This class will include readings and discussions on and about various people of character and then being able to apply what is learned in the corresponding service portion of the curriculum.

Engineering:

Life Skills:

All too often, students are taught in such a manner that truly only prepares them for university. The problem with this is two-fold: 1) not every student would like to further their studies in a university setting, but would rather attend a trade school or join the military, and 2) the students are not necessarily prepared for the responsibilities that they will inevitably encounter once outside of a classroom. These responsibilities include things such as: balancing a checkbook to changing a tire to creating a resume to learning how to make an informed decision when voting. In teaching our students these basic adult responsibilities, we believe that we are providing them with the tools necessary to become an effective citizen in today's society and for the Economy of 2030.

The sophomore life skills class focuses on financial literacy. All aspects of personal finances will be taught, including budgeting, banking, saving, concepts such as scarcity, pricing, value, need versus want, compounding, investment, credit options, credit history and credit scores, and more. Sophomores study the business concept of marketing. We look at the psychology of advertising, the difference between advertising and public relations, and the role of pricing. Students write a marketing plan for a chosen product, service or company.

ACT/SAT Prep:
Students are given tools to help them achieve their goals for education beyond high school. This means they learn how to navigate the college selection and entrance process. They learn about standardized testing, creating an academic portfolio, interviewing and essay writing, and other factors which go into successful application to institutions of higher learning. Time is also spent analyzing the financial aspects of higher education decisions. The business concept studied is leadership. We look at great business leaders, what they have to say about their success, and how great business leaders operate.
