12th Grade

Religion:

English:
Seniors study American literature, with a focus on the 20th Century. Novels and short stories make up the reading list, which is filled with authors such as: Mark Twain, Saul Bellow, George Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Shirley Jackson and Flannery O’Connor. Class time is devoted to lecture and discussion. The emphasis is on comprehension of the stories, extracting key themes and applying them to the larger narrative of human existence

Math:
Seniors may choose between calculus or statistics. Calculus is the demanding study of the mathematics of change. Students work with functions represented in a variety of ways; they study to understand the meaning of the derivatives and definite integrals and use them to solve a variety of problems. They will study the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, communicating these concepts both verbally and in written form. Statistics offers instruction in concepts for using data to analyze situations and solve problems. Students learn how to organize numbers or data points, and learn what can be determined from them.

History:
Students study government in the fall semester and economics in the spring semester. Government is almost entirely focused on American government, although comparisons are made to the governments of other countries. Students learn the details of lawmaking, public policy development, and the regulatory apparatus. Constitutional fundamentals are studied. Economics covers the American economy, including concepts such as pricing, supply and demand, flow of capital, small business economics, labor dynamics, the velocity of currency, local economies, the roll of the banking system and more.

Students at Unity High School also study history focused on the state of Minnesota and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Twin Cities area. We start with the territorial days of the area, working our way through the 19th Century up to modern day. We look at the development of Minneapolis and St. Paul as distinct cities and how they have merged into a single metropolitan area. We will look at the state’s agricultural roots and its current rural/urban dynamic. Political, business and social leaders from the state are studied.

Science:

Seniors study physics, which covers topics such as mechanics, motion, heat, light, sound, magnetism and electricity. Also covered are Newtonian dynamics and thermodynamics. In-class work emphasizes subject development, problem solving and laboratory exercises which require mathematical analysis.

Math:
Each student will continue with his or her individual lesson plan in math, based on their performance from the year prior.

Foreign Language:
Each student will continue with his or her individual lesson plan in their chosen language, based on their performance from the year prior.

Art:
Fall semester is devoted to Drama.   Spring semester students will learn to draw. While some people have more natural artistic talent than others, drawing is a skill that can be learned. Students learn the basics of drawing with pencil and other instruments. Students start by learning and practicing techniques, advancing to reproducing still-life settings, and ultimately moving toward landscapes and other imagery. Contour and proportion are key concepts.

Service:

Leadership:

Entrepreneurship:

Senior year, the course is devoted to the skills necessary to successfully live independently, including securing housing and employment. Students practice interviewing, they create a real resume, they learn the fundamentals of office etiquette and networking, and they learn job-hunting strategies. The final business concept studied is enterprise development. During senior year, students form groups and actually create a mock business. We run the business through simulations and various market scenarios, considering appropriate responses.
