Unity High School's patron saints, St. John Paul II and St.Teresa of Calcutta, are perfect role models for our students and staff. Their examples of personal love for Jesus Christ, strong devotion to Our Blessed Mother, and deep compassion for all people serve as spiritual guides for our whole school community.
St. John Paul II was born in Poland in 1920 and entered the underground seminary during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Although he suffered greatly during this time, he did not become bitter but rather grew in his relationship with Jesus. Ordained a priest in 1946, St. John Paul II later become a bishop, an archbishop, and a cardinal. In 1978, he was elected Pope and served the Church faithfully until his death in 2005. As Pope, St. John Paul II traveled to over 120 countries, wrote extensively on the dignity of the human person, and lived a life that inspired many to place their trust in Jesus Christ.
St.Teresa of Calcutta was entrusted with the mission of proclaiming God’s thirsting love for all humanity, especially the poor. A soul filled with the light of Christ, Mother Teresa's love for Him burned with one desire, “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” In 1928, at the age of 18, Mother Teresa joined the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ireland. After being sent by her order to India, she served as both a teacher and a principal before founding the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa's work with the poorest of the poor in Calcutta caught the attention of the entire world, and in 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Her humility, love, and service inspired many people to join in her work; by the time of her death in 1997, there were over 4,000 members of her religious order. Mother Teresa deeply desired people to know how much Christ personally loved them and longed for their love in return.
As a school, we ask for the intercession of St. John Paul II and St.Teresa of Calcutta to help us become great saints!
