Governance

Good governance is essential to any organization. As of yet, the project has been run by a founding team, initially consisting of Tom Bengtson, Matt Birk, McKaela Laxen and others who make a serious commitment to this project. These individuals meet regularly to execute the tasks necessary for a successful school launch.

In Spring of 2019, an interim board of directors will be assembled. Members will be invited onto the board by the founding team members and will be asked to serve one three-year term. The board will meet quarterly, with the original founding team continuing to meet as often as necessary to carry out the operation of the school. The main purpose of the interim board is to provide oversight to the founding team and senior staff carrying out the work of running the school in its initial years. Initial board membership is expected to consist of members of the founding team, an attorney, an accountant, at least two parents with students at UHS, and a priest (or his representative). Tom Bengtson will serve as initial chairman. The leading faculty member will hold an ex officio position on the board.

After three years of operations have been complete, the interim board will transition into a permanent board. At that point, the board will meet monthly. The board will have the following committees: Budget & Finance, Curriculum and Academic Excellence, Governance and Rules (mostly responsible for recruiting new board members), and Long-Range Planning. The board will consist of nine members, each serving staggered three-year terms. Board members will be elected by a process that includes parental input. Board officers (chairman, vice chairman, treasurer, secretary) are elected by board members. Members can serve two successive terms; sitting chairman can elect to serve a third term if desired. Board members will be expected to contribute in a meaningful way to the financial success of the school.
