Course Descriptions

Religion:
As the mission and curriculum of Unity High School will be centered around the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, it is only right that we have class devoted to learning about the life of Christ and His teachings. This time will be used to continue to foster the faith in our students and to provide space for them to ask questions in order that they might further their journey and begin to claim the faith as their own.

Language Arts:
English language arts (ELA) are all of the communication and language skills and processes people use every day to receive and send information. We receive information through listening, viewing, and reading, and we send information through writing, speaking, facial expression, body language, and auditory and visual representations. We use language to learn, to question, to share feelings, to help others, to be part of civilization. The ability to use and understand language, both spoken and written, is critical to every aspect of students’ lives.

Students learn and apply knowledge of the English language by gathering, comprehending, evaluating, synthesizing, and reporting information and ideas, by conducting original research in order to answer questions and solve problems, and by analyzing and creating a range of print and non-print texts in old and new media. They also explore the literature of several cultures and historical periods and create their own literature, learning how purpose, audience and cultural perspective impact one’s use of language along the way.

History:

Science:
Science is the active study of the natural and man-made world, including processes, structures, designs and systems. Science students use their senses and tools to observe, record and analyze data about the world and to make conclusions based on evidence. Scientifically literate young people can understand basic science concepts, use skills for doing scientific investigations, solve technical problems, and design technologies for today’s world.

Math:
Mathematics is a discipline whose basic ingredients are numbers, shapes and algebraic relationships. Logical reasoning is used to study the properties of these objects and to develop connections between them. The results can be used to understand and analyze a vast array of phenomena arising in all of the sciences, in engineering, and in everyday life. For this reason, mathematics is often called the “language of science.”

Foreign Language:
The study of world languages prepares students to be linguistically and culturally competent and to communicate, work and collaborate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds at home and abroad. Speaking the language of others is essential for understanding their culture, and for the global competency students need to be prepared for life and work in the 21st century.

Just as in math, foreign languages are unique in that students learn at vastly different paces from one another, and thus computers will also be used in order to meet the needs of the individual. Students will be able to choose one language from an array of languages that they would like to study, progressing with the same language throughout the entirety of their time at UHS. Students will be expected to master concepts sufficiently to read, write, speak and understand simple conversation of their respective language after the first two years of study, with more advanced comprehension expected after the third and fourth year of study.

Computer Coding: The students will be introduced to coding, a valuable skill with immediate, real-world applicability. Coding is what makes it possible to create computer animation, software, cell phone apps and websites. Students learn how coding works, common coding languages, basic website construction, and app development.

Entrepreneurship:

Choir/Drama:

Unity High School students will pursue education in both the performing and visual arts.

ACT/SAT Prep:
Students are given tools to help them achieve their goals for education beyond high school. This means they learn how to navigate the college selection and entrance process. They learn about standardized testing, creating an academic portfolio, interviewing and essay writing, and other factors which go into successful application to institutions of higher learning. Time is also spent analyzing the financial aspects of higher education decisions. The business concept studied is leadership. We look at great business leaders, what they have to say about their success, and how great business leaders operate.

Life Skills:

All too often, students are taught in such a manner that truly only prepares them for university. The problem with this is two-fold: 1) not every student would like to further their studies in a university setting, but would rather attend a trade school or join the military, and 2) the students are not necessarily prepared for the responsibilities that they will inevitably encounter once outside of a classroom. These responsibilities include things such as: balancing a checkbook to changing a tire to creating a resume to learning how to make an informed decision when voting. In teaching our students these basic adult responsibilities, we believe that we are providing them with the tools necessary to become an engaged citizen in today's society and for the Economy of 2030.
